Belgium has gone through a very unusual situation: it spent 541 days without a federal government. But finally December 6th they managed to elect Elio di Rupo as a Prime Minister. The fact is that this election has been followed worldwide with expectancy.
While having formed a new government represented by the Walloon party, they still can clarify their problems, that the country goes through. Since di Rupo government arrived the questions about the linguistic situation are even more alarming. This French-speaking politician can barely speak Dutch, and it concerns the Flamish part.
Citizans still care

even though there is a government formed, the situation will continue as it has been in the past, a failure
Marlon Care, a 27-year-old Flamish citizen with Italian roots, couldn’t care less about politics. He thinks that even though there is a government formed, the situation will continue as it has been in the past, a failure. He is completely against the division of the countries, as he said, “we are a very small country to think about separating from each other, we need each other”.
At first he was surprised when he knew who the Prime Minister was going the be, and about his difficulties with the Dutch he adds, “as a leader of the Belgium he has to be qualified to do his job, it doesn’t matter if he does or does not speak a perfect Dutch or French, but at least he has to have a basic knowledge”.
On the other hand, Tugce Kuz, a 20-year-old Walloon student is more concerned about the political situation, she doesn’t look down on the actual government, she claims that the situation is truly complicated and politicians are dealing with it working pretty hard, always trying to represent all interests of the citizens. “This isn’t easy if they have tree communities and three languages” she points out.
Tugce agrees with the fact that many things still need to be changed but the reform of the country cannot be made in two weeks.
She also agrees with Marlon about the relatively importance about di Rupo speaking fluent Dutch, “after what he has already done we can say that nobody is perfect but if you try to do your best, people have also to deal and accept the weakness”.
Belgium seems a divided country but after all people just want to live in peace and they won’t give up on their nation.
Jaimy Smink from Antwerp, he is 24-year-old unemployee. Politics bores him like many Belgian citizens; this is because during three years the country “hasn’t decided what to do or didn’t make any changes”. He doesn’t think that since the new government was formed something has changed, “people are still losing their jobs and money”, he claims.
He is fed up with this situation but he doesn’t expect much from the new government. He thinks they should just focus on uniting the country instead of dividing it like they are doing now.
As a citizen of the Flemish part, he thinks that the Flemish “should know more about what’s going on in the Walloon part and start focusing on improving the country”.
