Demographic problems in the European Union
Belgium and Spain are two important countries in the European Union where there are a lot of differents between the structures, but both has a high life expectancy and the same problem with fertility rate. Low fertility rates have caused population growth to slow considerably.

A traditional family.
The population in Belgium is estimated in 10,414,000 people. Spanish population is almost 47,000,000 people according by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). The area of Belgium is 30,528 kilometers and the area of Spain is about 540, 640 km.
So, Spain is, after France, the second country with the bigger population in the EU. Spain is the second country in the UE where the population has incremented more in the last year, in order to the immigration. It has incremented a 15,5 per mil in the last years.
Life expectancy
In the European Union life expectancy is 81,1 years for women and 74,8 years for men. Spain is the country in the EU where women have more life expectancy (84 years). Spanish men, with 77,2 years, are in the second point in the EU. Belgium is the seventh country in the ranking of the countries with more life expectancy. In Belgium people live until 81,7.
European’s population has aged rapidly over
Population younger than 15 years old is small and the population more than 65 years old is increased. Spain is one of the oldest countries in the EU. Only 14,4 per cent the population are less than 15. In Belgium the 16,5 per cent of the population are less than 15.
Fertility rate
There is a big different between Spain and Belgium in this aspect. In Belgium born more babies than in Spain. The fertility in Belgium is 1,61, higher than the EU media, which is 1,48. In Spain the fertility rate is 1, 29 babies. Furthermore, Spanish women are the older in have the first child. So, it’s a problem in order to guarantee the generation change.
