Frank De Winne Back from Space Expedition
It seems that Belgians enjoy wide popularity as leaders. Both on Earth and in Space.
Frank De Winne is the first European who was authorized to “hand out bedsheets” to ISS crew, if we can use Dutch expression “lakens uitdelen” (hand out bed sheets), which means to lead.
Actually ISS has a complicated system of command. Members of crew can change their roles. So on 1st of December Belgian astronaut was returning as a flight engineer and Roman Romanenko was his “chief”.
That’s why their favorite toast sounds like this:
- I have the best commander, let’s drink his health!
- No, I have the best commander, let’s drink his health!
And so on until the sunrise.
“Behind every great man there’s a great woman”
She is maybe not great (yet?), but Lena Clark, Frank De Winne’s wife, is working on a book about her husband’s stay in space.
NASA has a tradition of producing posters with image of astronaut. Recently they started to make stylized placards. It was his wife’s idea to make an official poster in a Star Trek style. Picard – the first European captain of a spaceship in the world cinema history.
As Lena Clark De Winne has PhD of psychology, she pays attention to the following subjects: claustrophobia, lack of light, fitness into orbit, physics and psychology, jet lag…
Investigation of psychological sides of life in space was one of the purposes of this expedition and may enrich contemporary science.
