Fashion is a trade of history
Modemuseum it´s located inside the first ring of Hasselt, therefore, in the heart of one of the tops cities in fashion and shopping terms of Belgium. Go there and discover how fashion has radically changed among the years since the Rococo times till the 80´s.

Part of the pieces of the exhibition
I found so interesting and paradoxical how fashion becomes more luxurious and important meanwhile economical periods. It happened in the 30´s after the crack of the 29: symbols like Marlene Dietrich or Clark Gable weared long, complicate and expensive dresses. In the 70´s also long dresses with a touch of nostalgia: retro, romance or hippy clothing where the hight-streets clothes. It´s the same with “the lipstick effect”, it´s said that in war or crisis
times this cosmetics (specially the red ones), are sold in biggger quantities than normally. Women replace small and feel-good items like lipstick, for more expensive items like jewellery. I learned there that there were two remarcable moments in fashion history: when the corsé dissapeared of the daily life since 1920, and when women started wearing trousers during the 70´s.
Something you don´t have to miss at Modemuseum: hats and pamelas section. I couldn´t imagine how different they can be: big, small, informal, haute-couture, with colourful feathers or bright mesh fabric, in soft silk, made with straw…

Paul Poiret´s fashion
